JOB SUMMARY:
UPD part time call takers answer emergency and nonemergency calls, obtain critical information from callers, answer questions, transfer callers to appropriate extensions, and enter relevant information on the computer.
ESSENTIAL FUNTIONS:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Handles emergency, non-emergency, and administrative calls,
• Screens, transfers calls, or takes messages for appropriate Unified Police Department (UPD) members,
• Transfers calls to 911/EMD certified dispatchers as needed,
• Deal with and handle phone calls with irate/hostile citizens,
• Receives calls from public inquiring about current cases and uses CAD system to find cases assigned to officers,
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
• Must be a U.S. citizen,
• At least 18 years of age,
• High school diploma or GED,
• Preference may be given to applicants that have experience in emergency dispatching, customer service, clerical, criminal justice, or call center experience.

• Operate multi-line telephone system;
• Follow written and oral instructions;
• Communicate effectively with individuals from various social, economic and ethnic backgrounds;
• Maintain confidentiality; perform effectively under pressure;
• Adhere to prescribed routines and practices;
• Maintain accurate records;
• Assist the public cooperatively and courteously;
• Establish successful working relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds;
• Communicate effectively in a variety of medias;
• Knowledge of telephone etiquette and complaint-taking techniques;
• Demonstrate proficiency in use of computers and associated software;
• A passing score on a typing test, 35 net words per minute;
• Must be able to pass the Unified Police Department background check and drug screen.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
• Ability to respond quickly and calmly under stressful conditions and time constraints.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION
• Background Investigation – After a conditional offer of employment is made, the Unified Police Department will conduct a comprehensive background investigation. The investigation includes but is not limited to, past work history, a criminal history check and a credit history check.
• Working up to, but not to exceed, 25 hours a week.
• Part time dispatch employees can work days, afternoons or graveyard shifts, any day of the week.
